Harlem is the home of the Harlem Renaissance which gave to the world many glorious works of art and as many equally glorious entertainers, politicians, and social activists. People like WEB Du Bois, Paul Robeson, Madame CJ Walker and Duke Ellington are just a tiny example of the royal family of world renowned celebrities who made Harlem their home.
More importantly, Harlem is a shining example of the perseverance and fortitude inherent in the African –Americans who survived decades of isolation, discrimination, domination, and exploitation by a hostile society that insisted on treating its occupants as third world citizenry.
Today Harlem is alive and well and thriving in a nation which has just recently started to accept and appreciate the contributions and the rights of its inhabitants.
